It's SPRING and Things Are Getting Wild!

Yes, wild in more ways than one as we inch closer to Spring Break.

Second grade enjoyed making Symmetrical Wild Things this week while the 4th grade continued their study of traditional North Carolina crafts with Face Jugs.

Pictured below are works of art by students from the classes of Mouser, Cuthrell, Crook, Robinson, and Shope.  Enjoy!

Cardinal Collages

As part of the 4th grade curriculum, students learn about North Carolina history.  As a connection to that, we discuss the symbols of North Carolina.

Our latest art creation in 4th grade is a collage featuring the North Carolina state bird, the cardinal.  For inspiration, we looked at the artwork of a native North Carolina artist named Mikel Robinson.  (see his website for more info: http://www.mikelrobinson.com/ )

We talked about creating "contrast" (a Principle of Art) by creating a colorless background and placing our bright red Cardinals on top.  We used newspaper and back and white maps of North Carolina to create our "colorless" background.  The result is quite striking!  Please enjoy looking at these students works from the classes of Shope, Hutton and Potter.

Next week we will move on to a North Carolina craft tradition: Pottery!

Color Monsters!

Wesley
For the past few weeks, the Kindergartners have been busy as little bees learning about mixing the secondary colors and making Color Monsters.  Ask any Kinder Critter at KHES what 2 primary colors make purple, orange or green and they can tell you!  Enjoy looking at these colorful characters painted with colors mixed by the students themselves and don't get too scared.  They are mostly nice. All paintings are from the classes of Hendricks and Farrell.
