Vincent van Gogh

All kids at KHES know about the artist, Vincent van Gogh.  Our lessons centered around his most famous painting, Starry Night.  This gave us a chance to review the terms "landscape" and "horizon line".  We also used what we know about creating a sense of "space" on a 2-dimensional surface.  Please enjoy the following "Starry Landscapes" created by the classes of Farrell (Kindergarten), Jernigan(3rd Grade) and Crook(2nd Grade).

Where is Ms. Valentine?

Any educator will tell you: Time to learn with other educators is the most valuable tool to enhance teaching.  So this weekend I am having the pleasure of attending the North Carolina Art Education Association Conference in beautiful New Bern, NC.  The weekend started yesterday with an art journaling workshop.  Doing my own art helps me feed my creative side so I can be more inspiring to my students.

I also attended a Cherokee Finger Weaving workshop today (Saturday).  Very fun and perhaps something to do with my 4th Graders connecting to their social studies curriculum.

One of my other hats that I wear is "Ambassador for The Art of Education"(AOE)  AOE is an online art school designed just for art teachers.  My job is to spread the news about AOE.  Below I am pictured in my role as AOE Ambassador as I set out Friday morning talking with people at the conference about AOE and passed out brochures and pins that said "Keep Calm and Teach Art".

Next Week at KHES:  I am very excited.  October 29th is National Cat Day.  I will be encouraging students to wear their cat clothes, jewelry, socks, etc! Starting Thursday Kindergarten-3rd graders will be creating "cat themed" art while learning about the Principle of Art: Pattern!

Please enjoy the following pictures from my New Bern experience this weekend.

Fall is Here!

Hayley
We have begun to move on to the Element of Art, SPACE in art class at KHES.  While the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are learning about the vanishing point, overlap and size, the kinders, 1st and 2nd graders are learning about the horizon line.

Please enjoy this beautiful fall landscapes by Ms. Cuthrell's 1st and 2nd Grade class.  These are mixed media using crayon and watercolor paints.

....And MORE Texture!

Texture is one of the most fun of the Elements of Art.  The third graders just finished doing some drawings in glue.  The glue adds "tactile texture" once it dries.  Then we added chalk pastel to the drawings. Enjoy these chalk and glue drawings by Mrs. Childress's class.

The fifth graders are learning about how to draw "implied textures" and adding them to their drawings to make them more interesting.  They are also learning about the creative process and "studio habits of mind" like envisioning their art ideas, planning and practicing. Can you find the textures in these drawings by students in Mr. Sakers's class?

For the rest of the month of October and into November, look forward to our study of the Element of Art "Space"(and in art class that doesn't mean "outer space"!) and our first school wide theme, the artist Vincent Van Gogh!
