The First Week of School is Upon Us!

Welcome to the first week of the 2014-2015 school year! Also,if you have just joined this blog, a BIG WELCOME to YOU!  I have many plans in store for students this year in art class. Each year I have a long range plan for what the school year will look like.  Themes, concepts, cultural units and project ideas are a big part of this long range view.  The following is a sampling of some of the themes you can expect your kids to be experiencing.

Artists:  Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, Vincent Van Gogh, Romare Bearden, Jasper Johns and Georgia O'Keefe
Cultures/Time Periods:  Asian and Medieval Art
Themes:  Under the Sea, Architecture, Robot Week, Cat Week, Snowman Week, Bird Week and Insect Week

Within all of the themes and topics, I will embed essential concepts from each individual curriculum, K-5th grade.

Expect photos of student work from all of these themed lessons throughout the year.

My professional goal for this school year is to offer more opportunities for students to reflect upon what they have learned and what they still need to work on.  The state is requiring official  Art Assessments of students this year and reflection is a key element in assessing.

A portfolio will be kept throughout the school year to aid in this assessment process.  Students will have an opportunity to look at their art as a body of work and see with their own eyes the growth they make over an entire year.  I greet this portfolio process with excitement and slightly, overwhelmed caution.

Keep your eyes open in the hallways as our first art project will slowly begin to appear on the bulletin boards.  All students will create a mini-self portrait this week in art class.

If you haven't already, be sure to click the blue button that says "Join this site" at the top right side of this post.  That way you will get reminders in your inbox so you can stay up to date on "The Art Experience with Ms. Valentine".  It's going to be a great year!

August is Here

Well, I've seen a steady increase in the "Back to School" commercials lately and now it is August.  The next 2 weeks are very precious to me as I try to strike a balance between focusing on my own art and planning for the new school year.  My plan had been to include more entries on this blog over the summer.  However, my online class absorbed more of my time than I had anticipated.  What a wonderful class it was though.  It was very rewarding and my students are going to benefit from what I have learned.

As we get closer to the first day of school, I will begin to give you some information about what the new school year holds for art class.  For now, I will leave you with some photos from my trip to Northern California and the Avenue of the Giants.

Creatively Yours,
Ms. V
