Thoughts for next Year

Summer Greetings!

As I continue with my online class which is, by the way, sponsored by The Art of Education my new favorite art teacher resource, I am learning so many new and exciting things!  I am being inspired with so many new ideas to improve the art program at Kitty Hawk Elementary School.  Most of the ideas are going to be implemented right away this school year.

The first and most important addition to the art program will be student portfolios.  All students will maintain an art portfolio.  These portfolios will contain all student art projects, formative assessment activities along with artist statements and practice work.

The idea behind keeping a portfolio is two-fold.  The portfolio provides a place to keep all artwork from school together in one place and it provides the students (and the teacher) a chance to evaluate their growth throughout the course of the year and at the end of the school year.  Then, the portfolios go home in one nice, neat package.

I will share more about the new and exciting ideas I have in future posts.  Keep enjoying your summer! I'll leave you with an idea for what to do with all of those seashells you collect throughout the summer in our little seaside village.  All you need are some sharpies.  I'll warn you though, this activity becomes an addiction!

Professional Development

One thing I am doing with my summer break is taking an online class.  In this class I am learning many ways to enhance my teaching practices.

While doing my coursework, I have been researching some more high tech tools to use for spotlighting student artwork.  One website that I have been closely into is "Artsonia".  If you have a chance, check it out and tell me what you think.

This website is a more organized way for me to create a "museum" of student art.  It is a great way for parents, grandparents and anybody to see specific kids' art.  There is also a fundraising element that I am not really considering one of my main reasons for using it.  It's free too!

Check it out!

Please tell me what you think.
