Winter Delight

This week my 1st graders enjoyed a collage lesson inspired by Lois Ehlert's book, Snowballs, about a snowy day made for making a family of snow "people" .  I find that literature is a great way to interest 1st graders in art projects.  After all, reading is a new adventure for them!  If you're not familiar, Ehlert's illustrations are "found object collages".  She uses everything from bus tickets to toy wheels in her work.  My students enjoy identifying all of the items in the collages.  We spent time pointing out objects that you buy at the store, objects you find around the house and in the recycling and things that nature provides.

So here are the delightful creations of the students from Ms. Gray's class.  Can you identify some of the object we used for our Snowball Snowman? Enjoy!

Color Explosion!

A walk down the hallway at KHES lately will feel like a color explosion!  All students have been learning about the color wheel for the past few weeks.  Each grade level can tell you something about color theory.
Please enjoy these art works by Ms. Mouser's 2nd graders and Ms. Sigler's 1st graders.  The 2nd graders made a "color tree" arranging the primary and secondary colors on their trees in the same order as the color wheel.  The 1st graders read the story The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and created their own very colorful fish painted with the colors of the rainbow.

A Room in Perspective

Using Vincent van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles as inspiration, my 5th graders designed a room of their own.  We discussed how the rules of perspective apply to inside a room as well as in a landscape.  As you will see, my students enjoyed adding unique details to their rooms.  You may even want to move in!
Please enjoy this work from the classes of Sakers, Davis, and Whitehurst.
