Owl Art

Owls are very inspiring!  As our students have been learning about owls over the past couple of weeks, they have also been learning some important art concepts. We have been focusing mostly on the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Space Value and Form), but the owl projects have opened up discussion of the Principles of Art (Pattern, Rhythm, Balance, Emphasis, Contrast, Movement and Unity) now.

Owls offer us an opportunity to play with pattern. The 4th Grade used watercolors and markers, the 1st Grade used watercolor and glitter paint and the 3rd Grade used oil pastels to create colorful, patterned owls. Please enjoy the following owl art by the classes of Childress, Gray and Hutton.

Color and Kandinsky

A quick Advertisement for Volunteers.  The art room is in need of volunteers to help with hanging art and prepping supplies.  Please email Ms. Valentine if you think you can help. valentineti@daretolearn.org

Also in the art news....Try to make it by the Dare County Arts Council Gallery, formerly the court house, in Manteo.  All art programs in the county participated in making an Art Bomb to decorate the entrance.  Some of our students helped make yarn pom poms at the Fall Carnival for this. The bomb will remain in place for the entire month of November.

This week we have had a blast learning about the color wheel and Kandinsky!  Kandinsky's favorite shape was the circle.  And, from the looks of it, my students feel the same.

So what did we learn about color?

5th grade was introduced to tints and shades of colors, 4th grade identified complementary colors, 3rd grade worked with warm and cool colors and Kindergarten through 2nd grade learned about the location of the primary colors and secondary colors on the color wheel and experimented with mixing colors.  Some of us even learned that when you mix all three together you get brown!

There's just something about working with colors that is so soothing.  Many kids seemed so relaxed as they explored the surface of their papers with the paint.  What a great week in art class.  Please enjoy the following works of art from the classes of Davis, Potter, Jernigan, Sigler, and Smith.

Don't forget, next week will be OWL WEEK in the art room!
